Chapter Five

~ Skylar ~

The walk back to our place is filled with laughs as we rib on each other. Mostly, it’s catching up Tyler on the pranks his sister’s pulled on me. Of course, Maya wants proof and Sophia obliges a little too eagerly with video clips they’ve missed on the internet. They’re not big on being online, and Tyler doesn’t even have Facebook, deeming it unnecessary. I forget there’s a real world out here at times, and that’s why I love hanging with Sophia. She’s the perfect balance of both worlds.

Without her, I’m not sure I’d ever go outside other than for groceries or appointments. Until she moved in, I was a hermit, living for algorithms and my online people. I never thought I was missing out, considering my own parents were heavy into YouTubing and were tech geniuses. I played on computers long before some of my friends growing up had. Slowly, I’d become an introvert, who’d rather not be invited to things.

Evidently, Sophia doesn’t believe in that. She drags me out to one of her events at least twice a week. Or she makes sure I celebrate holidays away from the screen. She’s even forced me to take days off. Once I’d gone thirty-six hours straight without sleep on the stream. Even before we met face-to-face, she made a habit of being my online voice of reason. Her all-caps repeated message of get to bed before I come find you had me clicking off. I think that’s the day I knew I was in love. No one had ever cared about my wellbeing other than my parents, and even that’s questionable at times.

“Hey, sis, if you’re okay, I’m going to head out,” Tyler says behind me, breaking me from my trance. Memories had a way of pulling me into deep thought. Glancing toward the door, I see Sophia giving her brother a hug as she pushes him out.

I’m settling on the sofa just as she comes forward. The familiar song starts to play on her phone, followed by her tapping away at her phone. “And done. Hashtag FYP. Hashtag Lesbians of TikTok.”

“Don’t you dare, Sophie. I mean it,” I warn her, knowing it’s a lost cause. Her hashtags are sure to land us among thousands of other, similar videos. Only mine is cringeworthy.

“Too late. Already sent,” she shouts seconds before she leaps on top of me, ready to tickle me. “I’m about to make you internet famous.”

“I already am, jackass. I don’t need my I Got You, Babe rendition floating through the web. I sound like I swallowed a frog.”

“Too bad, what you going to do about it? Huh?” Her slender fingers start their attack as I wiggle around.

I faintly recognize Leo coming in to grab something next to us. He says bye as the front door closes. I’m too busy trying to catch my breath from laughing so hard to notice we’re alone again. Sophia has me trapped in the fetal position as she sits on top of my body, making sure there’s no place for escape.
